Question & Answer interview with Delaware new home builder, Brian Lessard. Questions originally appeared in the Dover Post, Milestones In Business community newspaper.

Q: How did the Lessard family become introduced to the real estate and construction industry?

A: My grandfather, Dan Lessard, started a business based on providing new construction homes, pole barns and buildings in Long Island, New York in the 1940s. Following in his footsteps, my father, Addie Lessard, worked on the construction sites with my grandfather, learned the trade and passed the knowledge onto my brothers and me. When I was young, my family relocated to Delaware at a time when Delaware’s economic outlook was developing and there was more opportunity for the construction and agriculture industries. Before you continue you should make sure you find a construction scaffolding company to hire, that way the construction process can go by much more smoothly with the aid of a reliable and professional scaffolding company.

Q: What type of projects has Lessard Builders worked on throughout the years?

A: Lessard Builders has built schools, commercial buildings and residential homes in Kent, Sussex and New Castle Counties over the years. Commercial construction projects include Saint Thomas More Academy in Magnolia, All Climate Storage Center in Lewes, Sea Colony projects in Bethany Beach and office buildings in Camden. Some of these constructions have been more complex than usual, and valuable learning experiences. Thankfully, technology has made working in construction easier and simpler over time. Things that would have been impossible to build are now possible thanks to the use of tools and equipment. A good example is overhead cranes, allowing for more complex roofs, as well as faster and safer construction of taller structures.

Q: What type of changes have you seen throughout the years in the new home building industry?

A: Lessard Builders personalizes every home design we build so naturally we’ve seen a variation in residential plans over the years due to market trends and client requests. We’ve also seen new technologies be introduced that streamline certain processes or allow us to save time, making the whole process much faster. On our previous project we had a storm pass by and flood our new construction when we were only on our fifth or sixth day. This would usually mean halting everything for a week or two until the terrain was in good condition to work in. Instead, we employed a wellpoint dewatering system, and that made short work of the problem. Not having to wait for something like this to pass, and doing something about it instead has made our job easier, faster, and more comfortable for everyone involved.

Q: How many hours in a week do you typically work?

A: About 70 hours a week.

What is the best part of owning your own business?

Being able to share the business with my children.

What is the feedback or accomplishment you are most proud of?

Turning people’s dreams into reality. Before we hit the drawing board for a new home design we have a creative brainstorming session with each client to talk about how they live, what they want in their next home, the products they love and budget. Our goal is to shape these concepts into a personalized functional design that works in their price range and makes them happy.

What is a good business tip you don’t mind sharing?

Wake up every day with an optimistic outlook. Tell yourself that “today is going to be a good day”. If you start the day with a positive attitude, you’re setting an expectation for how the rest of your day will turn out.

What is the one piece of advice you would give to someone starting a business today?

Make certain that you love what you do. If you’re going to start a business, make sure you are truly passionate about your vision and not just in it to make the most money.

Where did you go on your last vacation?

Disney World & Universal Studios with my children and grandchildren

Do you have a guilty pleasure?

Vacations. I really enjoy traveling and vacationing with my family. It allows me to unplug, recharge and think creatively without distractions of the common business day.

Lessard Builders Partners With Habitat for Humanity For Delaware Home Builders Blitz Build For Delaware home builder Brian Lessard giving back the community has always been a priority. Over the years he has worked with numerous non-profits within the Delaware community through with local schools, organizations such as Harvest Years Senior Center, Catholic Charities, Archdiocese of Wilmington and in most recent years, Habitat for Humanity. “I enjoy working with Habitat for Humanity because everything you do is local in the Delaware community and as an individual you actually see your effort making a difference in your backyard. Today I feel grateful for my work environment. I just finished reading a few articles on the evolution of office space trends, in recent years closed office spaces were transformed to an open work environment that eliminated walls and grouped co-workers around multiple tables. Since then studies have shown that personalities and work ethics are clashing, affecting productivity and the open work environments are now incorporating work space pods. They are very small resemble the look and size of a helicopter cockpit. Yikes. So, what do mini work space pods have to do with a model home for sale in Lewes Delaware? I work from the professionally decorated model home in The Villages of Five Points and I appreciate working here for the cozy surroundings and convenient locale. The comfort of being at home working from the couch, at the dining room table, on the patio in the sun or working from the sun room on a breezy day totally beats an eensy weensy cubicle pod. The kitchen is just a few steps away when you need it and a cup of coffee at Arena’s Deli, dinner at FishOn! or pastries at Touch of Italy is a quick walk around the corner at The Villages of Five Points Town Center.

Lunch anywhere on 2nd Street downtown Lewes is only a few blocks away and taking a “brain break” to soak up the sun, sand and waves is easy to do before, during or after work. Often times I catch the sunset or sunrise at one of the beaches nearby in Lewes or kick off the morning with views of Oyster Rocks, Broadkill Beach, Lewes Beach, Cape Henlopen State Park, Lewes Boat Ramp, Canalfront Park off of Pilottown Road or Prime Hook Wildlife Preserve.

Unmask A Child’s Future Charity Event:
Delaware Masquerade Ball for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sussex County, Delaware

Prior to sitting down with the Sussex County organizers of the Unmask A Child’s Future: Delaware Masquerade Ba ll, I shared the same first hand knowledge that most people have about the Boys & Girls Clubs Delaware: that the clubs are gyms where the community comes together for after school activities and athletics. I learned that the Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware are much, much more than that and play a large role in the futures of Delaware students.

Let’s face it, life is not so easy being a kid these days. Poverty, obesity and high school dropout rates are real life challenges for today’s youth. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Delaware help combat these challenges by providing a unique mix of quality programs that focus on education, character building, physical education, health, and the arts. Collectively, the Delaware clubs serve over 25,000 youth — 1 out of every five school-aged children in the state. Over fifty percent of the children served have annual family incomes of $20,000 and forty percent of the youth come from single parent households. I was impressed to learn that 87 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to services and programs for kids and that sixty percent of club students in the educational programs see better results in Delaware State Testing.

One Large Event To Help All The Clubs in Sussex County
What makes The Delaware Masquerade Ball different from other Boys & Girls Club events in Sussex County? I can tell you from Gals That Give experience that it takes a lot of effort to put together a fundraiser – event planning, creating a committee, finding sponsors, auction items, securing the venue, choosing the menu, talking to vendors, selling tickets, sending invitations and then there are the small details that pop up along the way. There are six clubs in Sussex County and each individual club goes through this process multiple times a year for separate events within the same county, shared communities, sponsors, vendors, etc. The goal behind The Boys & Girls Club Masquerade Ball of Sussex County is to bring the Delaware community together for one event with larger sponsorships, attendance and proceeds to be split amongst the clubs of Sussex County. It makes sense to me! Neighbors helping neighbors – we’re a small state with a strong community and why not bring everyone together to support all the clubs in one large event and relieve pressure on some of the smaller events.
